Disposal Codes

This article contains a set of recommended standardized codes for culling events. It is important to have a clear set of codes while at the same time have a minimal set of codes so that producers are likely to use them.
Birth to weaning
1 – Born alive, died before weaning – disease 2 – Born alive, died before weaning – Weather event, accident, or injury 3 – Calf sold <90 days old 4 – Died at birth – Defect 5 – Died at birth – calving difficulty 6 – Died – High altitude disease/PAP 7 – Stillborn, Carried full term
Weaning through mature cattle
10 – Culled – Aborted 11 – Culled – Age 12 – Culled – Appearance 13 – Culled – Calf died 14 – Culled – Disposition 15 – Culled – Exposed failed to conceive 16 – Culled – Genetic defect status 17 – Culled – Herd reduction 18 – Culled/died – High altitude disease/PAP 19 – Culled – Hoof condition 20 – Culled – Injury or accident 21 – Culled – Production/performance 22 – Culled – Prolapse 23 – Culled – Sickness/disease 24 – Culled – Structural soundness 25 – Culled – Udder quality 26 – Died – Calving 27 – Died – Sickness/disease 28 – Died – Weather event, accident, or injury 29 – Sold – Pregnant, papers not transferred 30 - Culled - Open due to infertile bull
Reason for no calf reported
40 – Aborted/premature calf 41 – Calf stillborn 42 – Cow calved – calf not found intact or at all (e.g., predator) 43 – ET donor 44 – ET recipient 45 – Exposed and failed to conceive – moved to next season 46 – Exposed and failed to conceive – moved to next year 47 – Exposed and failed to conceive due to infertile bull - retained for breeding
